Captain Dianna Wolfson, Commander of the Puget Sound Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, officially opened the Command Career Center in a groundbreaking ceremony on February 26 at the location of the center next to Building 427 M-14415 trailer at the shipyard.

“It doesn’t really come close to home to develop this center for our people,” Wolfson said. “It’s pretty huge. I am really excited for this. It is an opportunity for our people to be able to plan and prepare for their growth. Having resources at their disposal is very, very important.

The Command Career Center was created to support the personal growth and professional development goals of all PSNS and MFI employees.

“Employees are encouraged and supported to take ownership of their future opportunities and realize their greatest potential,” said Cecily Norgaard, Career Center program manager with code 1182, Workforce Development. “The goal of the Command Career Center is to help employees plan, identify and take advantage of opportunities throughout all phases of their careers. “

Some of the services offered by the Command Career Center include:

Identify short, medium and long term career goals.

Share development opportunities, eg apprenticeship programs, internships, mentoring, buddies and rotational assignments.

Provide information on formal bridge and degree programs and cross-functional networking opportunities.

Provide advice on resume writing and the federal hiring process.

Realization of fictitious interviews.

Creation and updating of individual development plans.

According to Norgaard, the center complements the professional development resources available at select stores and codes, with a focus on whole person development and long-term, company-wide career planning. It is not designed to replace the professional development resources available at the store and code level.

The Command Career Center supports the career guidance initiative established by the People Executive Steering Committee, with specific services offered based on requests and feedback from PSNS and MFI employees.

According to Norgaard, the Workforce Development Branch has been working on the establishment of the Command Career Center since the proposal was signed by the former commanding officer, Captain Howard Markle, and approved by Captain Dianna Wolfson when ‘she took command in June 2019.
