The employment rate in the third quarter of 2021 stood at 60.3% compared to 57.7% in the same quarter of 2020, according to data released on Monday by the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat).

In particular, according to the results of the Labor Force Survey, the active population in the 3rd quarter of 2021 amounted to 472,314 people, i.e. 64.6% of the population (men 70.6%, women 59.0% ) against 452,154 people (62.9%). in the corresponding quarter of 2020.

The number of employed people was 440,959 and the employment rate was 60.3% (men 66.3%, women 54.8%) against 414,920 people (57.7%) in the corresponding quarter of 2020.

The number of unemployed stood at 31,355 and the unemployment rate at 6.6% of the working population (men 6.1%, women 7.2%) against 37,234 people (8.2%) in the corresponding quarter from 2020.

For the 20-64 age group, the employment rate was 77.2%. The rate for men was 83.2% and for women 71.5%. In the corresponding quarter of 2020, the rate was 74.5% (men 81.4%, women 68.0%). For the 55-64 age group, the employment rate was 65.5% against 61.9% in the corresponding quarter of 2020.

According to the distribution of employment by sector, the highest percentage of people employed was in services (79.9%), followed by industry (17.3%) and agriculture (2.8% ). For the 3rd quarter of 2020, the corresponding percentages were: Services 77.3%, Industry 19.8% and Agriculture 2.9%.

The share of part-time employment in total employment was 11.0% or 48,482 people (men 9.4%, women 12.7%). The corresponding rate for the 3rd quarter of 2020 was 10.2% (men 7.9%, women 13.0%).

CyStat said 88.1% or 388,296 of the total employed were employees, of which 13.0% (50,548 people) had temporary jobs. In the corresponding quarter of 2020, employees accounted for 86.1% of total employment, of which 13.1% were in temporary employment.

For young people aged 15 to 24, the unemployment rate was 14.5% of the working population of the same age group (men 14.1%, women 14.9%) against 20.4% (men 30 , 2%, female 10.8%) in the corresponding quarter of last year.

Regarding the duration of unemployment, 42.8% of all unemployed people looked for a job for a period of less than 6 months, 24.3% for a period of 6 to 11 months, while a percentage of 32.9% was long lasting. long-term unemployed. The corresponding rates for the 3rd quarter of 2020 were 53.3%, 19.6% and 27.1%.
