Businesses in Tunbridge Wells are posting record numbers of job openings, a local recruitment agency has said, following the easing of Covid restrictions.

TN Recruits, which finds jobs for job seekers in and around Tunbridge Wells, says it is experiencing its most active period in the company’s 17-year history.

Last week the Times reports the largest drop in unemployment rates in the borough since the start of the pandemic.

Currently 2,590 people are unemployed in Tunbridge Wells, according to June figures provided by the ONS [Office for National Statistics].

230 fewer people claiming unemployment benefits than the previous month [2,890] – the biggest drop since unemployment exploded last year when the pandemic hit.

The crisis saw the number of unemployed rise from around 1,000 before the onset of the crisis to a peak of 3,315 in May last year.

The successive easing of restrictions in recent months has seen the number of vacancies in the region explode.

Neil Simmons, who runs the employment agency for Tunbridge Wells TN Recruits, said the employment figures in and around Tunbridge Wells reflect what is happening across the country.

He said: “From our perspective, June has been the most successful TN Recruits month in our history (since 2014), and it looks like July will surpass June. We’re pinching ourselves because at this time last year we had our worst month on record. “

However, he warned local businesses that they may have to increase their wages to stay competitive, as ONS figures also revealed wages at Tunbridge Wells are below the national average.

Mr Simmons said: “Salaries at Tunbridge Wells have been in need of a long-term reshuffle and the pandemic is going to cause that, in my opinion.

“The draw for work opportunities in London has always been inflated salaries as well as the opportunity to work for large organizations.

“The downside of working in London has always been the travel and the lack of work-life balance.

“With more and more companies offering hybrid work solutions, partly at home, partly in the office, I am convinced that local businesses will have to compete with London salaries in order to attract the best talent.

“That said, it’s not just about salary at the moment – the added value that the candidates we meet tend to seek out are things like training and development opportunities to advance in their careers, and for them. working parents, a level of flexibility is required.

“There are a number of amazing businesses in and around Tunbridge Wells, and more and more people are recognizing what they need to do to make the offer attractive in terms of pay and benefits. “
