Italy’s employment rate drops by 0.2 pp to 60% in August 2022 (Istat)

The employment rate in Italy fell by 0.2 percentage points (pp) to 60%, according to the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat). In August 2022, the number of employed and unemployed decreased, while growth was recorded for inactive people.

On a monthly basis, the decline in employment (-0.3 percent, -74 thousand) affected both genders and was widespread across all age groups except for those aged 15 to 24 years, for which it has remained stable.

The employment rate in Italy fell to 60.0% by 0.2 pp, according to Istat. In August 2022, the number of employed and unemployed decreased, while growth was recorded for inactive people. Over the past month, the decline in unemployment (-1.6%, -31,000) has been recorded for men and under 35s.

In the last month, the drop in unemployment (-1.6 percent, -31 thousand) was recorded for men and those under 35 years old. The unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent (-0.1 pp) and the youth rate also to 21.2. percent (-1.9 pp).

In August, the increase in inactive people aged 15 to 64 (+0.7 per cent, +91 thousand) concerned both sexes and all age groups. The inactivity rate rose to 34.8% (+0.3 pp).

During the period June-August 2022, compared to the previous quarter (March-May 2022), employment increased (+0.4%, +85,000).

Over the past three months, a decline has been recorded for both the unemployed (-3.7%, -76,000) and the inactive aged 15-64 (-0.1%, -19,000), said Istat.

Compared to August 2021, the number of people employed increased by 1.8% (+406 thousand), the growth concerned both sexes and all age groups except 35-49 years old; the employment rate increased by 1.5 pp.

On an annual basis, the increase in the number of employed people was accompanied by a decrease in both the unemployed (-14.1%, -319,000) and the inactive aged 15 to 64 (-2, 6%, -344,000).
